Jocko Willink is not just a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and academy owner. He’s also a well-known retired United States Navy officer who served in the Navy SEALs – and a former member of the famed SEAL Team 3.
So, when he was asked what he would change in the curriculum of schools worldwide, he had an appropriate response: he would introduce basic survival skills and trauma medicine classes, as well as classes on everyday things:
Basic survival skills: how to start a fire, how to put out a fire… Basic trauma medicine – how do you do first aid? Just those kind of things.
How you change the tire on a car, basic plumbing, basic electrical… Like, some life skills that are very beneficial. Working on engines, those kind of things… Those are the kind of things that I would add to the curriculum.
Obviously, Jiu-Jitsu would be [there as well].
Yes, Willink would also introduce BJJ training in physical education (PE) classes. Why?
Because, among other things, it would do wonders against bullying:
The thing is… I’ve said this [before]. Jiu-Jitsu will not only help you from getting bullied. It will also prevent you from becoming a bully.
Because, when a kid is doing Jiu-Jitsu, they realize: “Oh, I’m a little bit bigger and stronger. I can take this person… But there’s someone that’s bigger and stronger than me and they can take me.”
And so, it helps on both fronts.
Sloth Jiu-Jitsu: you can be slow and unathletic and still kick butt in Jiu-Jitsu.
