Improve Your Collar Chokes With These 3 Simple Adjustments

Collar Chokes are probably one of the first submission techniques you were taught in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. However, despite them being a “first day technique”, Collar Chokes are more than well-applied across all competition levels (just take a look at Roger Gracie’s proficiency in using them). But, they’ll also take a long time to perfect.
Here are 3 simple adjustments that you can make for higher tap rates with this technique.

3 SIMPLE ADJUSTMENTS FOR YOUR COLLAR CHOKES

The first adjustment you need to make is to dig deeper. So many BJJ students establish their grips too shallowly, which doesn’t do anything to your opponent. Sure enough, you can grip too deeply as well; but it’s much easier to lower your grips than to make them higher when the you start applying the choke.
Secondly, start flexing your wrists. You need to use your wrists properly in order to place adequate pressure on the opponent’s arteries; plus, you’ll need to pull them towards yourself (by using your lats) and to prop yourself up towards them as well.

And finally, the third adjustment you should go for is holding the choke for a bit longer than you think you should. The Collar Chokes usually take a longer time to work than some other choke variations. So, the next time you apply it and you feel that your grips are properly placed, just keep at it for a few more seconds. You’ll get the tap soon enough.
