Roger Gracie Reveals Why John Danaher Doesn’t Wear Gi Pants

John Danaher, a well-respected BJJ coach, has long been a topic of discussion for his unique choice of wearing not just rashguards…
But also for wearing only a gi top during training sessions.

This peculiar fashion choice has been a subject of curiosity and speculation among BJJ practitioners.
However, now Roger Gracie has revealed the reason behind Danaher’s choice.

Contrary to what many might think, this was not a matter of convenience or comfort.
The real reason behind Danaher’s “no pants” approach was strategic – it made leg lock entries easier!

Roger explained that Danaher found the grips on the pants to be a hindrance to knee mobility during rolling sessions.
Therefore, the absence of gi pants made it easier for him to execute and defend against leg lock attacks.

Roger explained it the story behind it in a recent “Connect Cast” podcast episode:

I think Renzo (Gracie) told me that. I don’t know if it’s true. Renzo talks a lot.
He said, when his leg didn’t stretch, he could easily pass (Danaher’s) guard holding his pants.

What do you think? Is this a valid enough reason to not wear the gi pants?
