Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson, widely regarded as one of the greatest MMA fighters of all time, loves competing in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournaments…
Among other things, also because of the more relaxed weight-cutting requirements – in comparison to those of MMA.
Namely, weight cuts are standard practice in MMA – with fighters adhering to specific weight divisions.
However, in a lot of BJJ tournaments, competitors weigh in just hours before their matches, which allows DJ to compete at his natural weight.
Mighty Mouse spoke about the topic recently, in a conversation with Michael Bisping:
Being 37 years old, when I do Jiu-Jitsu, I can either go 141 or can go 154 [pounds].
Huge jump in weight. But the thing about Jiu-Jitsu, is [when you] have to weigh in [for tournaments]… You have to fight like 30 minutes after you weigh in, which I love.
He doesn’t have anything against the size discrepancy:
I’m not cutting down to 141. I’m just not doing that.
I’m showing up and I weigh 150 pounds. If you beat me cause you’re bigger, congratulations.
That’s how it is.
