Why Making A Choice – Any Choice – Is Better Than Doing Nothing In Jiu-Jitsu

Why Making A Choice – Any Choice – Is Better Than Doing Nothing In Jiu-Jitsu

Sometimes, when you roll and/or compete, you get into a position… And you don’t know what to do from there.
Be it a defensive or an offensive position, you’re not sure what the right decision is. You’re not sure what the proper choice is – because you’re afraid that, if you make a mistake, you’ll be back to square one. Or worse.

But here’s the thing. Not making a choice is worse than making a wrong choice.
Why? Brian Glick explains further:

You may have less-than-optimal choices – but you still have choices.

The beginning of a good escape can look awful and your chances appear slim (and they may actually be).
Standing on the precipice you don’t want to jump – so you say you’re trapped. But you’re only trapped when you’re trapped.

The submission in Jiu-Jitsu is so definitive because there’s no more to do.
But until then, there are always choices and always chances.

So, the next time you feel constrained, Glick has a question that you should ask yourself:

“Am I done… Or am I just afraid of the short-term consequences of making the choices I still can?”

The long-term results might be worth taking the risk and moving, instead of letting the short-term outcomes rule.
Make the choice, own the results and start from a new place.
