John Danaher’s BJJ & Life Advice: “For Everything You Do, Ask One Question…”

Jiu-Jitsu has a weird way of making your life better… And not just in terms of health and fitness – but also when it comes to the way you think about things.
After all, BJJ is a lot about problem-solving. And the better you get at problem-solving in one area of your life, the better you’ll be at it in all other.

John Danaher has a great piece of BJJ-related advice that carries over to just about everything you do in life.
And that is to extremely introspective about how you do things.

He explains:

For everything you do, ask one question: “Is this really the best way of doing things?”
Because in the vast majority of cases… The way you’re doing things, the way you are – is because that’s the way you were taught.

It’s not because you have proven to yourself or to others it’s the best way of doing things.
It’s just that it’s the way they’ve always been done.

In other words, if you want to become good at something, you need to think hard about the ways you’ve been doing that same thing.
That’s the way to improvement:

And so, if something’s important, ask yourself: is this really the best way it could be done?
And then you’ll see some interesting things.
