When your opponent has your back, you are stuck in one of the most dangerous positions in all of Grappling. Having someone’s back is usually a check mate moment where you are close to submitting your opponent. In essence, your opponent has complete control over your upper and lower body and your ability to attack them is close to none…

You shouldn’t panic if your opponent has taken your back.  It is still early and you will have many opportunities to escape from this dangerous position.

Of course you should never make yourself too comfortable when operating from this position. You should focus on the best and highest percentage escapes which you can implement regardless of how your opponent attacks you.

You should remember to always keep calm and never panic. If you know and understand these techniques, you will be successful in escaping the worst situations.

In this video, Japanese MMA Legend Shinya Aoki demonstrates his 5 favorite ways to escape the back mount.
