Coach: Holm Held Back on Purpose in First UFC Fights To Set Up Rousey Bout

Holly Holm knocked out Ronda Rousey in a 2nd-round shocker to take UFC bantamweight title. The kickboxing champion was a huge underdog coming into this title fight.

According to Holm’s coach Mike Winklejohn, the new champion was holding back during her first 2 UFC in order to set up a fight with Ronda Rousey.

Holm made her UFC debut earlier in 2015, with unimpressive wins over Raquel Pennington and Marion Reneau. Many fans had high expectations from once world Boxing champion Holm but were left unsatisfied with her conservative fighting style.

Winkeljohn told Paul Johnson of Yahoo Sports Australia:

“It’s just Holly is at another level when it comes to intellect. Footwork is always the key for Holly Holm in her fights and Holly has held back a bit in the past and that was all part of the plan. We knew we would fight Ronda one day and Holly showed why she is now the best in the world.”
