Want To Improve In Jiu-Jitsu? It’s Not Enough To “Just Show Up”

You often hear the “just show up” advice when it comes to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu…
But is this advice really enough for making substantial progress on the mats?

Nick “Chewy” Albin doesn’t think so.
Here’s what he had to say about it:

While that’s kinda true, it’s also not true… At least to me.
Because, when I ask my students: “Who came in here today, wanting to be mediocre?” Nobody raises their hand.

And I don’t think any of us want to be mediocre.
We don’t want to shoot for mediocrity – we want to be good, right? And if you’re going to do that, you can’t just show up.

We’ve all probably worked with someone at our jobs, where they just “showed up” – and it’s terrible!
They’re the most useless employees ever, right? They’re doing something, but we don’t want to work with them.

Chewy emphasizes that you have to show up with intent:

When you’re training and grappling – and, really, this goes for anything – don’t just show up. Show up with intent.

If you’re going to get on the mats, [ask yourself]: what are you working on?
What are you trying to improve? What do you want to get out of this training session? Be very focused and be intentional.

The best of students, Chewy emphasizes, always have a goal in mind when they train:

All of my best students, all of the best grapplers I’ve ever came in contact with…

They stepped on the mats and almost always, sometimes they didn’t do this but they just wanted to relax a bit…
But they almost always had something they were working on and they always had a goal that they wanted to extract from that particular training session.
