Keenan Cornelius is one of the most respected competitors in the sport but his perhaps greatest innovations come from the world of Gi. He’s been at the forefront of innovations such as worm guard, krab guard, hub position etc
He’s coming off the wings of ADCC bronze. Keenan was famously stopped by a guillotine of all things by Gordon Ryan.
As far as guard for nogi goes Keenan Cornelius told flograppling:
“As far as nogi goes you can’t really play de la riva and reverse de la riva any more. It has to be leg entries until like 50/50 or kneebar attacks. That’s just how it works. People’s passing has adapted to really know how to combat reverse de la riva and nogi open guards. Less people are passing on their knees – they pass ont he knees but they know how to block your head so you can’t invert underneath. 2012-2014 guard style you could get away with a lot Mendes brothers style stuff.”
Keenan added : “The DDS guys, the way they enter into their sweeps and leg attacks transitions into IBJJF tournaments as well and those kinds of people are leaning toward. Those kind of leg entries they’re doing are really effective.”
“I started incorporating some of the stuff I’ve seen them do and I’ve added my own little twists to it and literally 4 days ago I found this cool entry… It’s unique. I’ll try to use it “
