Keenan Cornelius: The Hub Position

Keenan Cornelius: The Hub Position

Keenan Cornelius is widely considered one of the biggest prodigies in bjj today. He’s quite known for his competitive achievements including double golds at 4 major tournaments: Worlds, Pans, Europeans and Brazilian National Championship.

In addition to all of this he’s also constantly working on innovations and through concepts like the worm guard, krab guard and many others he’s helped others reach their maximum.

This time he talks all about the position he calls The Hub. Usually someone will pass either standing or from the knees, but as Keenan put it there’s several in-between options. One significant one is when you step over the leg of an opponent.

32

It follows the principle of isolating the leg. The hub is very good for people who like to do toreando style passing. Of course it works rather well when an opponent is trying to set up a dlr guard on you.

When you step over the leg you sit on it with your but effectively folding it.

33

From there the left hand goes immediately to the collar.

34

This is handy because the opponent doesn’t feel vulnerable to it. Your other hand goes under the opponents other leg. This serves a couple of purposes: when you start to pass, his hand will go to defend and frame you but by reaching underneath you can block his hand before the framing starts.

35

This position lends itself to a variety of essential passing. This is why this is the Hub for a bunch of different passes. A position that will enable you superior stabilization of the opponent before you begin executing the chosen pass!
