John Danaher’s Superb Advice: “Get Your Hands On Them Early”

One of the most interesting things about Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is its unpredictability… Sometimes, you can never know the direction the match/roll will go!
However, if you’re on the receiving end of this unpredictability, then you should aim to minimize it as much as you can. At least from the opponent’s side – you have to be able to read their intentions.

But how are you supposed to do this?
Well, John Danaher has the solution:

Once you come to grips with an opponent you can feel their intentions.
This gives an advances warning of an impending attack and facilitates all your defensive reactions.

When you don’t have any hands on an opponent you have to figure out their intentions with your eyes, which usually takes longer and is more subject to deception.

Therefore, you should make it a habit to get your hands on your opponent early:

So when you come face to face with your opponent, make a habit of getting hands on him early and learn to read intention through then as accurately as a blind man reads braille through his hands – you’ll be defensively stronger and well positioned to get into counter offense.
