Grad Student Designs Study Questioning How Much BJJ Helps With Coping With Stress

BJJ is a relatively new martial art. As such it’s especially interesting to observe in a scientific manner or in such studies. One such study is what Turkish Sports graduate Özdemir Kızılkan had in mind.

Psychologists Praise Mental Health benefits Of Grappling

Özdemir Kızılkan is a purple belt under local Atos club.

Kizilkan used the following 8 Questions on his participants:

1. How often haven you been upset because of something that happened unexpectedly?

2. How often have you felt that you were unable to control the important things in you life?

3. How often have you felt nervous or stressed?

4. How often have you felt confident about you abilty to handle your personal problems?

5. How often have you felt that things were going your way?

6. How often have you been able to control irritations in your life?

7. How often have you been angered because of the things that were outside of your control?

8. How often have you felt difficulties were pilling up so high that you could not overcome them?

And managed to get consistently better results for the bjj practicing crowd – across the board.

New Scientific Study Measuring Positive Influence Of Jiu-Jitsu on PTSD

The scale on which the participants answered included option Never, Almost Never, Sometimes, Fairly Often and Very Often.

BJJHeroes.com even provided a chart for Kiizilkan’s research

While these results are hardly applicable in general they work to corroborate the points of many scientific researches we’ve published over the years indicating that BJJ is a good way to cope with anxiety from PTSD to general life.
