Last Saturday (30th of June) during the World Jiu-Jitsu Championships in California, United States, Alexander Trans reached a historic achievement. After Ricardo Evangelista, his training partner in Abu Dhabi, opened for him, the Dane became the first non-Brazilian to ever reach the final of the open weight at black belt in the Worlds. However, on Sunday (31st), the athlete suffered an injury during the quarterfinals of the category, and had to leave the competition. Thus, Bernardo Faria was the champion in the open weight.

In a statement published on his official account on Instagram, Trans explained the injury suffered on the last day of competition, thanked the support and said he now plans to recover and to compete in ADCC, which will be held on 29 and 30 August in Sao Paulo:

“I still can’t believe what happened this weekend. After winning 3 fights in the Open Class of the World Championship on Saturday, my training partner @ricardoevangelista opened for me in the semi, and I was in the Open Class final. I had one more fight in my division on Saturday, and on Sunday my first fight was the quarter-final of my division. In the first seconds of the fight, my opponent put me in 50/50, and somehow my knee got twisted in a weird way during the movement. I felt a big pop in my knee, and I felt it become completely loose. All I could think of for rest of the fight was that now I wouldn’t be able to continue. I managed to win the fight, but there was no way I could continue fighting. I want to apologize to everyone for not being able to fight the Open Class final which was a dream for me, and for not being able to close out my division with my brother Ricardo as planned. Now the struggle to recover starts, and I will do everything possible to be ready in time for ADCC! Thanks for everyone who is supporting me in this difficult moment, it means a lot to me!”
