Yan Xiaonan Responds To UFC 300 Controversy: “Choke Was Tight, But I Wasn’t Out”

UFC 300 saw its fair share of controversy, specifically in Yan Xiaonan’s fight against Zhang Weili.

In the closing moments of the first round, Weili locked in a Rear Naked Choke against Xiaonan.
When the bell rang, it appeared that Xiaonan was out – as she was somewhat limp and was struggling to get back on her feet.

In a post-fight interview with MMA Junkie, Xiaonan explained what happened:

I was close, but not completely out.

I saw the clock on the cage side and knew there were only a few seconds left.
I signaled to the referee that I was OK, but with only one hand to defend, the choke was tightening.

When the bell rang, I knew I had to stand up to show I could continue.
I was wobbly but managed to make it to my corner.

And, although there was also speculation about the use of smelling salts by her corner, Xiaonan stated that she was too focused on her cornermen’s instructions to notice much else:

He put his finger under my nose and pressed.
Honestly, I was so focused on my cornermen talking that I didn’t notice much else.

And I also asked my corner which round is next? Second?
Because I kind of couldn’t remember it at that moment.
