UFC 300 Controversy: Was Yan Xiaonan Choked Out Unconscious?

Zhang Weili found herself bewildered during her strawweight title defense at UFC 300 – as she thought that she put Yan Xiaonan to sleep with a Rear Naked Choke.

Weili had Xiaonan in a back take towards the end of Round 1, locking in a Rear Naked Choke.
And, as the bell rang to signal the end of the round, Xiaonan appeared to be unconscious, prompting Weili to release her hold.

Xiaonan then exhibited delayed movement and struggled to rise to her feet, leading many – including UFC commentators – to speculate that she had lost consciousness.

Reflecting on the moment during the UFC 300 post-fight press conference, Weili said:

I really thought that she was out.

I didn’t know when the bell rang how the referee was going to handle that, but she bounced back very quickly in the second round.

Nevertheless, Weili secured a unanimous decision victory.
She remains humble:

I definitely want to build my legacy.

I still feel I’m some way to become a legend.
I still have a lot to learn.
