Transgender professional wrestling star Nyla Rose has found herself in the middle of controversy…
After being banned from competing in Oklahoma.
Namely, the Oklahoma State Athletic Commission’s decision came after classifying her match last December as intergender – a move that violates the state’s regulations on combat sports.
Rose, who transitioned from male to female, has been a prominent figure in All Elite Wrestling (AEW) since its beginnings in 2019.
Despite her wrestling license being registered as female, the commission deemed her match against a cisgender female opponent to be in breach of state rules.
In response, AEW CEO Tony Khan expressed surprise and disappointment at the commission’s decision:
It was not something I was expecting and of course, I was disappointed by the commission’s position and by that warning.
I don’t think we did anything wrong.
I’m really, really disappointed, shocked by it.I don’t think there should be discrimination against transgender wrestlers or transgender people at all and, you know, they have rights and to that end, I absolutely stand by Nyla Rose.
AEW stands behind Nyla Rose and all transgender people who want to play sports and this is wrestling.
