Bruno Fernandes, GSP’s BJJ Coach: ‘He’d Do Well in the BJJ Circuit’

Bruno Fernandes is the head instructor at Gracie Barra Montreal, has a PhD, and is an assistant professor at one of the most prestigious medical schools in Canada (McGill University), speaks four languages, BJJ coach of former UFC champion George St. Pierre, and still finds time to travel the world for surfing.

Fernandes is a 3x world champion at brown belt and knows Georges Saint-Pierre’s Jiu-Jitsu like few others.

In an interview with TATAME, he talked about GSP’s Jiu-Jitsu:

“In the UFC, Georges shows only a small part of what he knows. As his main objective is performance, the focus is on what is efficient. In training, he is very versatile, and has a complete game standing up and on the ground. I’ve been training with him for years and he always aims to improve his Jiu-Jitsu, “

Some people challenge the BJJ black belts of certain MMA fighters. GSP, however, is worthy of putting on graduation.

“Without a doubt, he is a legitimate BJJ black belt. He’s already a black belt for over 6 years and it took him quite a while to get there. Well before being famous he has practiced Jiu-Jitsu, including going to New York to train at Renzo Gracie academy with John Danaher and others. With or without kimono I’m sure he’d do against very well against other competitors on the current circuit.”

Saint-Pierre is away from octagons since 2013, when he defeated Johny Hendricks via split decision – and controversy. In these two years away from competition, “Rush” did not stop training.

“Georges is a natural athlete who never stopped training. He always sought to improve his technique and keep the philosophy of martial arts to improve always. Even retired or during periods of recovery, his training routine is comparable to that of any Olympic athlete. If he will fight again I do not know, but if he does, he’ll be back at the top “
