Tragic news are coming from João Pessoa, Paraíba (Brazil). A young man, just 21 years old, has passed away on January 26 – after he suffered a blow during Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training.

According to Tatame, the Civil Police report indicated that the man, identified as Gil Anderson de Paiva Silva, was training Jiu-Jitsu at a Youth Center.
He was practicing the martial art with a training partner, before the team coach arrived. Then, while he was underneath his partner, Gil Anderson started feeling sick – he was suffering from cardiorespiratory arrest.

The man was then taken by the training partner and other people who were at the scene to the Emergency Care Unit.
The Unit reported that the BJJ athlete arrived in an „extremely serious condition“ and that, despite the resuscitation maneuvers carried out by the medical team, he passed away.

The report states what happened in further detail:

He suffered a bronchoaspiration due to the impact of the blow, with a swelling in the neck. Talking to the doctor, there was an attempt at intubation, but because of the swelling, it was not possible.
A priori, it is worth noting that there was no malice on the part of his (training) partner.
