The “Hip Kimura” A Revolutionary Variation of the Classic Kimura Lock

In the world of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, the quest for innovative techniques is unending. Recently, Legion AJJ coach Mike Gardner shared a unique approach to one of BJJ’s most classic submissions: the Kimura. This novel variant, named the “Hip Kimura,” offers practitioners a fresh perspective on leveraging this powerful lock.

Understanding the Hip Kimura

Gardner’s technique deviates from traditional Kimura attacks by utilizing the hip to control and finish the submission. The technique begins with obtaining a standard Kimura grip. However, instead of the usual execution, Gardner demonstrates tucking the opponent’s hand behind his hip, hence the name “Hip Kimura.”

Application in Various Positions

Gardner explains the versatility of the Hip Kimura, showing how it can be applied from several positions. This flexibility makes it a valuable tool in a grappler’s arsenal, adaptable to different scenarios in a match.

  1. From Back Attack Defense: While defending a back attack, Gardner secures a Kimura grip and uses his belt or lapel to trap the opponent’s wrist. This setup leads to the Hip Kimura, where he bridges and rotates towards the trapped arm for the finish.
  2. From Top Half Guard: Gardner describes using the Hip Kimura from the top half guard. Instead of the traditional approach of trying to free the leg, he slides his knee through over the opponent’s wrist, setting up the Hip Kimura directly.
  3. From Turtle Position: When an opponent is in the turtle position, Gardner shows how to obtain the Hip Kimura by trapping the arm and rolling into position, ensuring control and effectiveness of the submission.

Key Technical Details

In each demonstration, Gardner emphasizes the importance of controlling the opponent’s arm and preventing them from straightening it. The effectiveness of the Hip Kimura lies in maintaining a bent elbow and keeping the opponent’s hand trapped behind the back.

A New Approach to an Old Favorite

The Hip Kimura offers a refreshing take on a familiar submission, adding another layer of complexity and opportunity to the Kimura. Gardner’s instructional video not only provides a step-by-step guide to executing this technique but also encourages BJJ practitioners to think creatively and explore beyond traditional methods.

The Hip Kimura is a testament to the evolving nature of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and the continuous innovation within the sport. Gardner’s unique approach demonstrates how even well-established techniques can be reimagined, providing new challenges and opportunities for practitioners at all levels.
