The harsh reality of operating a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy

The harsh reality of operating a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy, particularly a smaller one, often goes unspoken. Managing such an academy is incredibly challenging.

The stress and anxiety that come with running the academy can be overwhelming, potentially leading to mental exhaustion and depression, even among the most relaxed individuals.

Criticism and comparisons are common, with people often treating you more as a service provider than a person. Friends and family might expect discounts, undervaluing your effort compared to larger, more impersonal gyms.

Communication can be a source of worry too. If you miss replying to a message or email, you might fret over whether others think you ignored them deliberately, disappointing them or damaging your relationship.

The demands of keeping the academy successful can strain your personal relationships, with many owners struggling to maintain any semblance of work-life balance.

Running the academy means wearing multiple hats: you’re the instructor, administrator, marketer, accountant, and custodian, all while managing personal responsibilities as a pet owner, spouse, family member, and friend.

Success in such a venture is rare after 5-10 years because the demands can be overwhelming.

It’s an exhausting endeavor, made even more so in recent times when factors beyond our control have added to the stress.

Remember, we are just ordinary people with busy lives.

So, be kind, be patient, and support local Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academies… and hopefully, more of us will manage to thrive!

Also, be aware that prices may change; what was charged in 2022 might not be the same in 2023 or 2024.

This was inspired by another small academy owner, and it’s genuinely reflective of our experiences.
