That Time Eddie Bravo Slipped His Meniscus Live on JRE

Knees tend to take a beating in jiu-jitsu, with positions like De La Riva, rubber guard and Single-Leg X guards abound… Most grapplers will experience frequent knee injuries in their careers.

Agel et al. found the most common injuries in grappling practice to be knee injuries (14.8%), and ankle injuries (7.3%).

Complete Guide To Knee Injury Prevention For Grapplers

One of the most common knee injuries are meniscus injuries.

How do you know if you have a torn meniscus in your knee?
If you’ve torn your meniscus, you might have the following signs and symptoms in your knee:
  1. A popping sensation.
  2. Swelling or stiffness.
  3. Pain, especially when twisting or rotating your knee.
  4. Difficulty straightening your knee fully.
  5. Feeling as though your knee is locked in place when you try to move it.

How can your meniscus slip out of place?

This occurs when the ligaments that attach the meniscus to the femur and tibia are absent. Without these ligaments, even a fairly normally shaped meniscus can sometimes slip into the joint and cause pain, as well as locking and popping of the knee.
