After the UAEJJF instilled their new legislation making the maximum weight for a female competitor 90 kilograms (and 110kg for males) Tayane Porfirio found herself in a tough situation.
As the last year’s winner of Abu Dhabi World Pro as a year old brown belt she was met with a conundrum – she would no longer be eligible to compete at UAEJJF events given that her walking around weight was a bit over 130kg (285 lb).
The math dictates that for Tayane to be able to compete there next year, she must lose almost a third of her current weight – entire 40kg. But when we consider that she fought Mackenzie Dern standing at 58 kgs last year, perhaps this limit is a good choice that will leave plenty of room for athleticism to be rewarded.
Porfirio told flograppling:
“I started dieting about a month ago, they want the women’s division to be 90kg, and I decided to lose weight to feel more agile. I’m working with a sports nutritionist that is helping me a lot and monitoring me”
Losing 40 kilograms is no small feat but one thing is for sure – it will be very interesting to see how Porfirio’s technique adapts to such a huge change in her physique!
