In 2013 all leg grabbing techniques were banned in competition by IJF, Judo’s rulling body.

Their goal was to make Judo more dynamic and attractive, but by enforcing this change, many of Judo’s original techniques were lost forever.

Here are are the 12 banned techniques:

Morote Gari
Kuchiki Taoshi
Kibisu Gaeshi
Kani Basami
Kawazu Gake
Sukui Nage
Utsuri Goshi (borderline – due to risk of holding uke below the belt line)
Kata Guruma
Obi Otoshi
Ushiro Goshi (borderline – due to risk of holding uke below the belt line)
Ura Nage (borderline – due to risk of holding uke below the belt line)
