How To Sweep A Much Heavier Opponent

Sweeping a much heavier stronger opponent is one of those feats every jiu-jiteiro is proud of. Dealing with a heavier opponent is a big selling point in those Jiu-Jiteiro vs ____ clips but there’s an even bigger degree of respect tied into sweeping a heavier opponent that already knows what’s coming.

Here’s how Mansher Munchie Khera recommends approaching a much heavier opponent. Khera is a lightweight – of around 162 lbs! And he’s won the open class several times.

Starting from butterfly guard. It’s crucial to first clear the arms of the opponent (in this case much heavier, Bernardo Faria)

This is where Khera recommends going for a 2-1 grip.

From there you either use the momentum when the opponent tries to snatch their arm back or you swing it out of the way and grab onto their leg! There you get a butterfly hook on the opponent’s shin. This is to isolate the leg – but it doesn’t end there given that his leg is also very heavy.

And at the same time you push away his other leg with your free arm.

Once the weight redistributes and is a little off the closer leg we start to attack. Next step is swinging underneath opponent’s hips and as we go …

…we’re switching to the far leg.

Here we find ourselves in the X guard position. From here the opponent often moves his leg controlled by our legs away. Because of the weight it’s optimal to sweep from your back.

It’s important to be still hooking behind his knee and over his hip like the picture below.

Here Munchie recommends switching your hooks –

Your hand should also be pushing his knee as your foot tries to get his foot off the mat.

From here you can attempt an ankle lock or transition to passing!
