A referee wouldn’t allow Andrew Johnson of Buena @brhschiefs to wrestle with a cover over his dreadlocks. It was either an impromptu haircut, or a forfeit. Johnson chose the haircut, then won by sudden victory in OT to help spark Buena to a win. pic.twitter.com/f6JidKNKoI

The incident has been referred to state officials and the body that governs high school athletics in New Jersey.
The New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association has recommended that the white referee at the center of the controversy, Alan Maloney, be sidelined “until this matter has been reviewed more thoroughly.”
This is not the first incident for Maloney. Maloney used a racial slur at a social gathering of officials in March 2016.
Maloney, who is white, used the slur in an argument over homemade wine in a Jersey Shore condo after many of the officials gathered following a youth tournament in Wildwood. Another official, Preston Hamilton, who is black, then slammed Maloney to the ground over the remark.
The wrestler’s coaches argued the referee’s decision for several minutes, until the referee started the injury time clock. At this point, the wrestler removed the cap, and agreed to have his hair cut.
UFC welterweight champ Tyron Woodley is FIRED UP over the high school wrestling ref who made a black kid cut his dreadlocks before a match. He told TMZ:
Now the young man’s family has spoken up as CNN reports:
Charles and Rosa Johnson, speaking through their attorney, Dominic A. Speziali, said in a Monday statement that the conduct of the referee who forced their son, Andrew, to cut his hair “appears more egregious as additional information comes to light.”
They allege that the referee was late to the meet and didn’t question their son’s hair or the need for a head covering during the initial evaluation.
Andrew chose to have his hair cut rather than forfeit the match, according to a letter from the school district Superintendent David Cappuccio Jr.Video of a trainer cutting Andrew’s hair with scissors in the middle of the gym quickly went viralon Friday after it was shared by a local reporter from South New Jersey Today.“The referee is behind them directing her to keep cutting until he was satisfied with the length,” Speziali says in the statement.
