The heel hook is a tremendous weapon, both in grappling and in MMA.
While we see heel hooks more often in Grappling, they are if applied properly and keeping you far away from strikes, very effective in MMA.
The UFC has just released a very interesting video of all the heel hook finishes in the UFC from 1993 to 2020.
The first ever heel hook finish in UFC history happened as early as UFC 1 in 1993. Ken Shamrock heel hooked Patrick Smith at UFC 1 to the surprise of the crowd. A few years later, Rousimar Palhares made a name by securing four heel hook finishes in the UFC. Interestingly, Palhares is the only fighter to have more than one heel hook finish.
