Elevating Jiu-Jitsu in Germany: The Rise of the Jiu-Jitsu League Germany

In January 2023, Alexander Sak, Ahmed Laaribi, and Jurij Schiefenbusch had the idea to launch the BJJ Weekend, a monthly three-day seminar series held at different BJJ gyms across Germany. These seminars, free for black belts, aimed to bring together competitors from across the country for intensive training camps. This initiative fostered stronger connections among athletes and increased attention for local gyms.

Building on this successful model, by the summer of 2023, we decided to host prestigious tournaments, inspired by the renowned events of the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF), which were no longer being held in Germany. Our goal was to fill this void and elevate the status of jiu-jitsu in Germany to the level it enjoys in countries like the USA.

These efforts led to the creation of the Jiu-Jitsu League Germany. Under its banner, we organized various tournaments that not only offered high-level competition but also attracted participants and spectators from across Europe. Furthermore, we introduced Pro-Events within our tournament series, such as Grand Prix, Superfights, and Belt Challenges. These events offered attractive cash prizes, further increasing their appeal.

Since the establishment of the Jiu-Jitsu League Germany in August 2023, we have organized numerous tournaments and implemented initiatives like a ranking system to engage and support our community. Additionally, we’ve formed partnerships with local clubs and businesses, helping to broaden our reach and promote the growth of jiu-jitsu in Germany.

Our overarching vision remains to elevate the sport, promote camaraderie, and provide accessible opportunities for all practitioners to participate and thrive.
