In a surprising turn of event USADA announced todat that UFC athlete Cris Justino “Cyborg” has been granted a treroactive therapeutice use exemption and will face no anti doping violation for a prohibited substance in December of 2016!
Cyborg reportedly tested positive for Spironolactone on a test taken December 5th 2016. Spironolactone is a prohibited substance in the category of Diuretics and Masking Agents and is prohibited at all times under the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, which has adopted the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Prohibited List.
Cyborg said:
I am extremely happy that USADA took the time to carefully review the detailed TUE application that I submitted, and agreed that my use of the prescription has always been medically justified. I look forward to returning to the octagon as soon as possible, and proving that I am the Pound for Pound champion of WMMA. I would also like to thank my fans for their continued support and my Team Cyborg, who made a very difficult time easier for me.#letsgochamp ” ALL GLORY TO GOD” ! “GLÓRIAS A DEUS! “
Justino immediately identified the med perscribed by her doctor for the treatment of a common endocrine disorder as the source of the prohibited substance detected in her sample. She also participated in multiple interviews with USADA’s investigative team and consented to USADA interviewing her physician as well.
To receive approval of a TUE, athletes must submit medical records demonstrating a verifiable medical diagnosis and legitimate medical need for the requested medication in accordance with the applicable WADA guidelines.
This is one of the first such cases in the new era of USADA UFC collaboration.
It’s unclear when we’ll see Cyborg duke it out for the women’s featherweight title because De Randemie declared her hand injured shortly after defeating Holly Holm in a questionable fashion. Holm has since appealed the loss.
