When passing the guard, especially if your opponent is more skillful than you, you need to create the element of surprise. In the right situation, there’s no faster way to pass the guard and go directly to a side control, than to pass using this method.
No grips are needed, just go for it.
For anybody in BJJ, the hardest opponents to deal with are the ones that are faster than you. When you are faster than your opponent, they can’t keep up with your transitions. You can scramble out of their submissions before you they fully lock them on and you will slap on submissions on them so quickly that they almost have no time to react.
There is a good feeling when you are able to do this.
