BJJ Scout’s Latest Vid Questions Importance of Traditional BJJ Positional Progress

BJJ Scout has been an interesting personality since he first emerged on the youtube scene with his insightful videos.

Once very much dedicated to purely jiu-jitsu technique, in his latest video, he questions “traditional” jiu-jitsu’s thought process on positional progression, especially it’s implementation in mma where certain jiu-jitsu concepts might even hinder you from scoring some much needed ground and pound.

Still he is as much of a fan of Demian Maia as any of us, as evidenced by his many Maia videos and breakdowns.

This had prompted him to release something on Ben Askren – highlighting a road of a traditional wrestler who once indulged the classic bjj sports style thinking as indicated by the first several minutes of the latest video (attached on bottom).

Of course all of this was prompted by Jorge Masvidal’s impressive athleticism and the ability to stave off Demian Maia’s amazing back control and determination to sink in the Rear Naked Choke.

What many might not be aware of is that many coaches and athletes from the mma community are avid fans of these breakdowns even going so far as Masvidal’s team liking this video themselves:

In this latest video, he highlights Ben Askren’s path as a traditional wrestler ,initially indulging in the classic bjj sports style thinking in his early MMA years.

But is it really so, did focusing on positional jiu-jitsu hinder Ben Askren from achieving his optimal fight readiness?

BJJScout seems to think so – as Askren’s thought progress has previously made him lose position and scramble quite a bit as seen below

So instead Askren re-tweaked his approach and adapted his wrestling! Which is especially helpful given that he doesn’t really have a that diverse submission arsenal.
