Why Demian Maia Won’t be Grappling Nick Diaz at Metamoris

Demian Maia completely dominated Gunnar Nelson at UFC 194, and asked for a shot at the welterweight belt. The BJJ black belt and ADCC champion may have to wait in line as the title holder Robbie Lawler has many challenges up ahead including a rumoured return of former champion Georges St Pierre.

Maia (22-6 MMA, 16-6 UFC), a former middleweight title challenger is riding a four-fight winning streak.

Maia has been contacted by Metamoris founder Ralek Gracie for a grappling match vs suspended UFC fighter Nick Diaz. The match would have been a meg success in the grappling community, but Maia in a n interview with MMA Junkie announced that the match was off.

Metamoris has been successful at bringing MMA stars such as Josh Barnett, Rory McDonald, Jake Shields or Chael Sonnen to compete in submission only grappling super fights against BJJ athletes.

In the past, Nick Diaz was supposed to face multiple world champion Braulio Estima at the Jiu-Jitsu world expo in a grappling super fight for charity, but he didn’t show up at the last minute, leaving Estima without any opponent.

Let’s hope that we will get to see him very soon in a grappling super fight while he waits his turn for a UFC title shot.
