Thiago Silva

UFC veteran Thiago Silva barricaded himself inside his Florida home on Thursday evening and was surrounded by a SWAT team after threatening people at a Pablo Popovitch’s BJJ school, according to NBC Miami.

Sources close to Silva have confirmed to MMAJunkie and Bleacher report that it was the UFC light heavyweight who was involved in the SWAT standoff.

Silva walked into the Pablo Popovitch Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Center made unspecified threats and left to go back home.

It is believed that Silva’s wife, Thaysa, trains under Popovitch. According to sources close to BJJ Eastern Europe, it appears that upon hearing of his wife’s possible infidelities with her Jiu Jitsu coach, Pablo Popovitch, the top UFC light-heavyweight barged into their school gun-drawn, looking for Pablo.

No one at the school was injured.

Once home, he barricaded himself inside before surrendering to the authorities, which included a S.W.A.T. team. There were no injuries reported at either Popovitch’s academy or Silva’s residence. According to news station South Florida 6 NBC, the suspect was taken into custody at 11:15 p.m. ET.

UFC officials were not immediately available for comment but later issues a statement to MMAjunkie:

“This evening, we were made aware of a situation involving Thiago Silva,” the statement read. “We are in the process of gathering the facts and have no further comment at this time.”

Silva trains with the Blackzilians team and has been booked to square off with Ovince St. Preux at UFC 171 in Dallas on March 15. This ufight is now highly unlikely. The Brazilian last competed at UFC Fight Night 29 in October, taking a unanimous decision over Matt Hamill.
