Relson Gracie Recalls How Helio Made Him Into A Champion

 

 

The second eldest son of Helio Gracie, the red belt Relson Gracie reigned during his time, having had according to him, 140 Vale Tudo fights and remained unbeaten for decades. But those who think that the relationship between father and son was easy, is wrong. Helio did not like Relson surfing, because he said it was a bum sport.

A rebellious teenager, Relson Gracie did not like to study and inherited the nickname ‘Champion’, from jis Surfer friends, because even when attending social events, he was always first on the podium. The red belt recalled in an interview with Fight Ag, how his his father dealt with his rebellious son:

“Every parent has a problem with their children, Helio get along with everybody, but with me he had a problem because I loved to surf. In fact, whatever my father said, I always listened because he knew what he was saying, but surf was difficult for him to understand at the time. ”

The red belt, now running his own academy in Rio de Janeiro, says that he did not like to study and, therefore, his father demanded that he be successful on the mats.

“I remember when I was a teenager, I was very bad at school. I did not like to study and my father told me, ‘If you do not like to study, then you’ll have to be the best fighter’. He made a deal with that me that if I won the championships I would be ‘free’ of the studies and he knew what he was saying.

From that day, I won every championship I entered and jujitsu replaced my school life. I had 140 fights, never got punched in the face and never had a fight that lasted more than a minute. I can only thank my father for that “he concluded
