Poland’s Joanna Jedrzejczyk Becomes UFC’s First Ever Eastern European Champion

Poland’s Joanna Jedrzejczyk has done it. She became the first ever Eastern European Champion in UFC History.

Joanna Jędrzejczyk is now UFC Women’s Strawweight Champion. She is also a six-time world champion and four-time European champion in Muay Thai.

During her Muay Thai career, Jędrzejczyk was trained by kickboxers Ernesto Hoost and Paul Slowinski. Upon making the transition to MMA, she began training with Szymon Bonkowski and Robert Drysdale

She defeated Carla Esparza (10-3 MMA, 1-1 UFC) by keeping the fight standing and tagging her on her feet.

Jedrzejczyk (9-0 MMA, 3-0 UFC) was hammering away until referee Don Turnage was eventually forced to call a stop to the bout at 4:17 of Round 2, making Jedrzejczyk the new UFC women’s 115-pound champ.

Jedrzejczyk turned to celebrate, then fell to her knees, nearly in tears.

Jedrzejczyk told UFC commentator Joe Rogan in a post-fight interview:

“No one believed in my grappling, wrestling. I said, I am in (the) UFC, the best federation in the world, and I am a complete MMA fighter. Nobody (is) going to take this belt from me.”

Jedrzejczyk told Fox Sports after the bout:

“Like I said before, I was working so hard on my wrestling, but no one believed in me. I’m not a striker anymore, I’m a complete mixed martial artist,” . “I still cannot believe that I’m the first European-based champion. After every fight, I’m so happy on the inside and the outside, but after this one, I’m more happy on the inside for my parents, for my boyfriend and for my country — for everyone. I’m going to take my belt back to Europe and show everyone. I’m just so happy.”

With the win, remains undefeated in MMA (9-).
