Paulo Costa Remembers His Origins: “I Come From Jiu-Jitsu”

Paulo Costa began his professional MMA journey in 2012.
Today, he has a record of 14 victories – 11 knockouts, two referee decisions, and a single submission.

Interestingly enough, despite his knockout record, his roots aren’t actually in boxing, kickboxing, nor anything like that…
They’re in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu!

“Borrachinha” was a guest on a recent Thunder Voice Podcast episode.
Here’s what he had to say about his martial arts origins and how he developed from there [translated from Portuguese]:

I came from Jiu-Jitsu, I come from Jiu-Jitsu, but in 2012 I started training a lot of boxing and then I realized that I had a lot of knockout power.
With the glove being too small, the blows hurt a lot.

He further improved his stand up skills from there:

I started to invest in the quality and skills of boxing, and kicks too, but mainly Boxing – which is what measures the distance best to your opponent.
It was at the very beginning (of his MMA career).

I already had the idea that I couldn’t just do Jiu-Jitsu.

It is worth noting that Paulo Costa is an incredibly skilled BJJ black belt.
And that his next UFC fight will be against none other than Khamzat Chimaev!

Their UFC 294 bout will will take place on October 21st, in Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates).
