Marc Goddard Shares What He Told Brian Ortega – After Holding On The Submission For Too Long At UFC Mexico

Brian Ortega, a former two-time contender for the UFC featherweight title, faced off against ex-UFC interim champion Yair Rodriguez at an exciting co-main event at UFC Fight Night: Mexico.

The fight concluded with Ortega securing a victory through an Arm Triangle Choke submission, early in the third round…
A win, that was not without its share of drama.

Namely, it appeared that Ortega held on to the submission for longer than he should have.
Or, at the very least, longer than the referee Marc Goddard wanted to allow him to.

Check it out on the video below:

Post-event, Goddard took to his X (formerly Twitter) account to clarify the situation…
And emphasize that there was nothing but respect in his and Ortega’s interaction:

We had a little conversation, nothing but respect & thanks.

All my interactions with Brian have always been great, he was just a little caught in the moment of the tap.
Nothing to see here.

Let’s just celebrate an amazing fight & wonderful night in Mexico.

Ortega also shared his perspective of what took place:

When I went in, I kind of dove deep, and I clenched my jaw and I could not really hear anything.
Just squeezed for dear life and it was, like: “Whatever you do, don’t let go.”

After, I apologized to the ref and everybody, said I’m sorry.
