Bernardo Faria Hints at Retirement & Opening His Own Academy

Bernardo Faria Hints at Retirement & Opening His Own Academy

5x world champion Bernardo Faria made his return to the 2017 Worlds after a serious injury kept him away from competition for a big part of the past year. This year Faria just fell short of the gold when he lost 9-0 in the super heavyweight final to the same person that eliminated and injured him last year: the controversial Erberth Santos.

Last year, the biggest upset at the Worlds 2016 was the triumph of Erberth Santos over Bernardo Faria via armbar in the semifinals of black belt Absolute. Erberth Santos attempted to pull an armbar over Faria injuring Faria’s pec.

Faria who is known as one of the kindest and friendliest people in Jiu-Jitsu recently reflected on his blog on his recent competition and announced that he’s having second thoughts about competing again and also talked about opening his own academy:

Dear BJJ Friends,

Finally I’m ready to write something to you guys about this past weekend…

After 1 year without competing, I took part in the Worlds Championship and I ended up in second place in my division (Super Heavy). This was not the result that I wanted, at this point of my career, after all the sacrifices I have made for Jiu-Jitsu, all injuries and all of the hard work that I put into my training, I only focus on winning when I’m competing. But with that said, after 1 or 2 days feeling completely depressed that I lost in the finals, here I am – happy again.

It was my 9th World Black Belt Finals in the Adult division, I won this tournament 5x before, and in 2015 I won the Double Gold, when I won my division and the Open Class which is the biggest dream of any Jiu-Jitsu competitor in the planet. I also won the Pan-Ams Open Class 3x, what nobody had ever done in Jiu-Jitsu before. I know there are guys who has done more than me in Jiu-Jitsu tittles, but Im super proud of my own story, that I wrote through a lot of hard work and sacrifices since I was 14 years old.

So I believe that there is no reason to feel sad now, I fought with my heart, I did everything I could in every match, I overcame myself, because I lost to one opponent in the Open Class, and next day I beat him in my division, and I left everything I had on the mat.

Im not sure when or if I’m going to compete again; after 17 years training and competing at the highest level, my focus is starting to change. I’m getting way more motivated to share all these experiences I have had with you guys through my Youtube Channel “Bernardo Faria BJJ” and my Instructional DVDs & Videos, than I am about only competing and thinking about myself and my own career.

The truth is that in order to be the best you can, you gotta be a bit selfish, or maybe a lot selfish. For example, during my 4 years teaching and training at Marcelo’s school, I think I only trained with less than 10% of the students there, because I was always “hunting” the toughest guys on the mat, every day, every training and every time. I don’t remember when I was the last time I called a student who only did BJJ as a hobby, to do an “easy roll” in the school.

I believe that now its time to start enjoying and sharing more and more of what I have learned, instead of just thinking about my own training and career.

This not an retirement statement, but I’m also not sure when or if I’m going to compete again. All I can promise is that now it will be the time I will do my best to share all these experiences that I have had during these 17 years. I will do it while I’m training, or while I’m teaching, or while I’m in the studio creating videos, or any time. Its time to be obsessed again, but now not about myself and my career, but about sharing as much as I can with everybody interested in learning and improving their Jiu-Jitsu game.  Everything I achieved in my life was because I was completely obsessed with doing my best everyday. And now that’s how I feel about this new moment that I’m living. I can’t count how many days in the last 2 years I went to sleep 2 or 3 am, because I was creating contents, ideas, and figuring out ways to help more the bjj community.

I would like to thank every single one of you for all the motivational messages I have been receiving through facebook, instagram, emails, and everywhere. There is no money in the World, that could buy the experiences I have lived in this beautiful sport. And you are part of this, because you are the fire I always used to motivate myself to “kill myself” in every single training session. So thanks a lot for all the love and support.

Also, soon I will announce some big news for everyone who lives in the state of Massachussets. And also for everyone who visits Massachussets or have plans to visit the Boston Area.
