Belfort Responds to Jon Jones’ Grappling Match Request

Vitor Belfort has been in the news a lot lately. Mostly due to the fact “The Phenom” is set to retire after a long and fruitful career in the UFC. While Belfort left his gloves on the mat he was also not too timid to announce that “we’ll be seeing him soon” in farewell instagram post.

One particularly warm response came from Jon Jones who wants to rematch Belfort but in a Grappling superfight:

Enjoy your retirement brother, you deserve it. Thank you for the magnificent fight, learned a lot about myself that night. Nothing but respect for you @VitorBelfort
Ps I know my arm would have been a nice little trophy for you, maybe we can run it back sometime in the future. Charity jujitsu match or something 🤙🏾

The message shocked the public and the press about a possible rematch between the champion, this time in Jiu-Jitsu. GRACIEMAG then sought out Belfort so that he could confirm if a grappling superfight with Jones would be a plan for the future, and the Brazilian made himself available:

“Fighting Jiu-Jitsu is in my DNA. I am known for my knockouts, but my root is Carlson Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. It would be a pleasure to have time to dedicate myself to the art that put me in the world of sports and to test my training.”

Vitor Belfort first got into Jiu-Jitsu through Carlson Gracie. Initially, he was training with one of his students, who told him that he “needed to train with Carlson,” because he “was too tough for the other guys in the gym.” Belfort moved to the United States with Gracie, eventually receiving his black belt in BJJ under him at the age of 17 (you have to be 18 to receive a black belt) before they had a falling out.

Belfort was a rising star in BJJ, but he never competed in the World championships. The lure of MMA was too big for him.

Learning the leg attack game is a smart thing to do if you want to pursue the no gi, sub only game. Learning this game will give you an advantage of the standard points seeking fighter. So don’t be a fool, and start picking up leg entanglements and attacks. If you really want to improve this part of your game, then you need to check out Craig Jones new DVD Set “Down Under Leg Attacks.”  Craig Jones is quickly becoming one of the biggest superstars in bjj due to his outstanding performance at ADCC 2017 in Finland where he was able to submit Leandro Lo.  He recently competed at an EBI and submitted everyone on his way to the finals via inside sankaku heel hook.  He almost got the king, Gordon Ryan in an arm lock in the finals but fell short!
