Fabricio Werdum is getting ready to start new phase in his life – it looks as though his long tenure in the UFC is over. This of course comes after failing a doping test and subsequently getting suspended for 2 years. Werdum, 41, is likely to go on fighting in Akhmat FC.
”What I would really like right now is to be free, that the UFC would have consideration with me and release me,” Werdum said. “It’s a matter of Ali talking with (White) now. Ali really has a good friendship with Dana White. It’s not only up to Dana. They always say that, and I go talk to someone else and they say it’s not only up to them as well, it’s that game. I obviously love fighting in the UFC, but after this (situation), this unfair doping, I would like to fight in other promotions.”
As for his manager, controversial Ali Abdelaziz he said:
“I think Fabricio’s done. You’ll never see him in the UFC again,” Abdelaziz told MMA Fighting. “They need to do what they need to do, but at the end of the day, Fabricio has to do whatever he needs to do for his family. I know Dana’s tough, but these guys have hearts. They understand this is his only source of income.
“Now Fabricio’s 41. After his suspension ends and he comes back, he’ll be 43. What is he going to do? If they open a senior league, we’ll wait. But Fabricio Werdum did not cheat, you understand? How stupid are you to cheat at 41 years old? You’d have to be.
“I think Fabricio will be fighting in Russia (next), to be honest with you. I need the UFC’s blessing for this. I want their blessing.”
Going as far back as 2015 Werdum has been an ambassador for Chechnya based Akhmat Fight Club. AFC is owned by Ramzan Kadyrov who is quite a controversial figure and has a number of human rights abuse accusations on his doorstep.
