Things You Should Probably Never Say to Your BJJ Instructor

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu isn’t easy and it’s quite often contrary to inept instincts. Here are some pearls of wisdom you should probably keep to yourself:

There’s a place and a way to ask questions and this most definitely isn’t it. Additionally there’s a right way and a wrong way to phrase something. Questioning your own abilities isn’t quite the same as questioning the instructor’s ability to demonstrate a technique he is teaching

“But X did it better on youtube?!”

Modern age has brought many complications with itself – youtube being one of the major headaches of modern day bjj instructors. While youtube makes for a great additional resource some techniques are better to learn the old school way and then modify if needs be.

“Is this going to be on a test?”

This kind of a question gives off the impression that you’re in it for the ranking and bragging rights as opposed to personal growth, sport accomplishment and self defense.

“I deserve a better ranking”

Your instructor knows you and when you fulfill his or her unique criteria. There are no universal answers so stop looking for a definitive answer. Enjoy the journey and don’t focus so much on a destination
