Ontario Jiu-Jitsu Association Issues Statement, Hoping To Gain Recognition To Solve Criminalization

There was quite a ruffle yesterday when we learned that bjj and grappling are on their way to being criminalized in Ontario.

Ontario Will Be Criminalizing Amateur BJJ and Grappling Starting July 1st

However there seems to be some hope the issue will be resolved without criminalizing the sport which we love.
Ontario Jiu Jitsu Association released a statement detailing their plan to deal with the ban:

To the Ontario Jiu-Jitsu Association Membership and community:
We are sure you are aware of the recent changes for amateur combative sport made by the Government of Ontario, scheduled to take effect on July 1st. While the order recognizes Jiu-Jitsu as a combative sport, it did not name a Provincial Sport Organization (PSO) for Jiu-Jitsu. As such, competitions are not permitted until such time as a PSO is named.
For those unaware, please reference the following links – https://www.ontario.ca/orders-in-council/oc-10872017 (Order in Council) http://www.mtc.gov.on.ca/en/sport/sport/amateur.shtml (Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport)
The Ontario Jiu-Jitsu Association has been working with the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport to rectify this situation and once again, gain recognition as the PSO for Jiu-Jitsu. We are hard at work continuing this process with our representatives at MTCS and are hopeful that this situation will be resolved soon – we are in what we hope are the final stages of this process.
It should be noted that the OJA was the recognized PSO for Jiu-Jitsu by MTCS in Ontario for many years and are committed to getting this status back as soon as possible. We have always operated our events to the standards dictated by the MTCS.
In the meantime, we are forced to postpone both the Provincial No-gi Tournament, scheduled for July 8th and the Canadian Submission Expo show, scheduled for July 9th. All members that have registered for this tournament will be refunded their money via PayPal as soon as possible.
We apologize for this – but the OJA has always conducted our events to Ministry standards, operating legally and with the greatest protection for our member athletes, coaches, academies and families. The OJA will continue to advocate for our members with the MTCS.
We will advise you all once the PSO for Jiu-Jitsu is named and our events are able to be rescheduled.
Again, we apologize for this action and hope for a quick resolution.
