Olympics 2016: Judo Preview

Judo events will betaking place from August 6th until August 12th during the upcoming Olympic Games in Rio De Janeiro.

The action is quite promising! Here’s the overview of most likely techniques to be observed:

Number 1 on the most often scored throws is an old fave of many BJJ legends – Morote Seoi Nage. Back during the last Olympic Games in london there were 39 points scored from it and 12 were huge ippons! Specialist of Morote Seoi Nage is Slovenia’s Tina Trstenjak and also a Korean fighter An Baul!

Another frequently used throw in bjj is Uchimata. This throw was scored as many as 37 times during the last OGs making it 2nd top scorer. Known for especially superb uchimatas are Masashi Ebunuma, Teddy Riner and Shohei Ono!

First USA Olympic Gold Medalist in Judo however has a different favorite. Kayla Harrison is known for favoring Harai Goshi!

Another anticipated technique is Kouchi Gari. Usually Kouchi Gari is often used to create movement and instigate bigger action.

Tai Otoshi is the last on our list. It may be a rare sight but it is a welcome one for sure! It’s rather spectacular when it happens. It requires plenty of speed and precision – it is most likely to be utilized by Britain’s Ashley McKenzie or Brazil’s Tiago Camilo.

Among huge favorites for gold?

Chrisse Agbegnenou – Agbegnenou and Yarden Gerbi have exchanged titles in the under 63 kg category over the past few years but then Tina Trstenjak surprised both of them by winning most events in 2015. It’ll be interesting to see Agbegnenou try and defeat her on her road to victory in 2016 Olympics.

Teddy Riner – One of the most exciting fighters around is France’s Teddy Riner. He just might be one of the clear favorties to win a gold medal in Olympic Judo history. But there are no real certainties so even though he’s an 8x World champion he will have to fend off all the young and inspired athletes in the Over 100kg division.

Masashi Ebinuma – The 3x World champion is widely considered one of the best technicians around, especially in the Under 66kg category. Attacks come from all directions with Ebinoma. His Ouchi-Gari transition into Uchi-mata is known as lethal. His main counter part will be the current world champion An Baul.

Shohei Ono – The under 73kg division is blessed with the presence of Shohei Ono from Japan. The top class competitor has so many techniques one can hardly guess what’s in store when they oppose Ono. We’ve seen him score anything from uchi-mata to ashi-waza!
