Old school BJJ black belt under Ralph Gracie, Alan ‘Gumby’ Marques had the chance to meet Helio Gracie and conduct the last ever interview of the Grandmaster.
He shared a hilarious story of what happened at the meeting.
We get to see a lighter side of Helio Gracie that most people don’t know.
Gumby was at the old Gracie academy in Torrance California, together with Nino Schembri, Gerson Sanginitto, Rorion Gracie and Helio Gracie.
As Rorion Gracie was giving a very serious speech about how Jiu-Jitsu changed the world of Martial Arts, when Helio Gracie let out excessive gas numerous times and very loudly and disrupted Rorion’s speech and concentration. He then started laughing loudly. The group was frozen, and out of respect for Helio, stayed silent.
Helio was in his 90’s at this point and excessive gas is very common in the elderly.
Gumby of course, shared the story and meant no disrespect to Helio or Rorion by sharing this story.
