MMA fighter Jose Andres Cortes Subdues Alleged Mugger, Controls Him Until Police Arrives

Every so often the criminal element gets unlucky and picks a trained victim. This was allegedly the case with MMA fighter Jose Andres Cortes and the man who allegedly tried to mug him.

According to the Orlando Sentinel, Jose Andres Cortes was walking on Datura Street and Dixie Highway, in West Palm Beach, when a man tried to choke him from behind.

Sadly for the mugger Cortes had plenty of grappling experience. This is why he held onto the assailant’s wrist and promptly took him down.

Cortes said he controlled the man down hoping to de-escalate the situation until police arrives.

“I said, ‘It’s OK guys, I’m a pro fighter,’” recalled Cortes. “Then he gave up.”

Cellphone footage captured the moments after the initial incident, with Cortes holding the alleged mugger in place.

“Women need to learn to protect themselves because men see women as victims,” Cortes said.

Cortes added:

“I just wanna recommend people to take some self-defense classes,” Cortes said
