Flashback: Maynard James Keenan Hip Tosses Fan and Takes his Back while Singing Ultimately Mounting

Maynard James Keenan is a man of many talents. He’s been working as a musician, producer, winemaker and actor! If you keep up with the music scene you’ve probably had the pleasure of listenting to Grammy Award winning progressive metal band Tool (he’s the vocalist) or perhaps A Perfect Circle or Puscifer. He’s also very into jiu-jitsu!

“Jiu-jitsu is about finding your boundaries. It’s a humbling experience, because there’s always somebody who’s much better than you are. If you can get your head around that and accept that and really just be concerned about yourself, learn about your boundaries, learn about your place in the world, then you can exceed and move forward with whatever limitations you have.”

Keenan training with a young BJ Penn, Dave Camarillo and Gumby.

Keenan was promoted to a purple belt in 2015 after years spent practicing. It was one of his original BJJ instructors Luis ‘Limao’ Heredia (student of Rickson Gracie) who promoted him. He is currently a brown belt.

But back in 2010 he had an extraordinary display of skill – and all while singing. Maynard James Keenan hip tossed a fan and then promptly took his back. All. While. Singing.
