Mark Zuckerberg Explains What his BJJ Game Looks Like: Gi or No Gi, Favorite Submission

Facebook Founder Mark Zuckerberg is known to be an avid practitioner of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Zuckerberg began training in the martial art around a few years ago and has continued training regularly ever since and even competed last month.

In terms of style, Zuckerberg favors more of a no-gi approach to Jiu-Jitsu, focusing on techniques that can be applied without the use of a traditional uniform or gi. This no-gi style is sometimes referred to as submission grappling and emphasizes techniques like chokes and joint locks. Zuckerberg trains under Guerilla Jiu-Jitsu head instructor Dave Camarillo.

When asked about his favorite submission technique on Lex Fridman’s podcast, Zuckerberg mentioned that he particularly enjoys using a rear naked choke from the back. He also prefers using a more pressure based top game.
“In MMA and No Gi BJJ, unless you have a good guard, it’s better to be on top.”

Based on his preference for no-gi training and his affinity for the RNC, it seems clear that Zuckerberg’s Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu style favors submission-focused techniques that can be applied both with and without the traditional uniform. While the gi can offer advantages in terms of grips and leverage, Zuckerberg appears most interested in submissions that work regardless of whether or not he is wearing a uniform like a Hayabusa Jiu Jitsu Gis.
