Mackenzie Dern Explains Presence Of Translator In Post Fight Interview

Mackenzie Dern had been forced to address the viral clip called Evolution of Mackenzie Dern’s accent in her pre fight batch of interviews.

She was born in Phoenix, Arizona, the daughter of Wellington “Megaton” Dias, and her mother is American. She grew up in Arizona and graduated from Ironwood High School in Glendale, Arizona.

Over the past few years, she has been spending a lot of time training and competing all over the world including Brazil.

Ariel Helwani always asks the questions that the fans want to hear. So he asked Mackenzie why her accent has changed over the years:

She answered:

Yeah it’s so flattering (laughs). I haven’t seen this video and I won’t watch it you know but I’ve been asked about it you know. I think after my UFC fights they’ll pay more attention to my fight you know, but they’re paying so much attention to this it’s a compliment you know. They look at that but I want people to understand like this is me and who I am and you know. I think they will pass in a while.

However last night things took an even stranger turn. After a split decision victory against Yoder

There was a translator at hand to which the spectators had less than kind reaction:

Dern ultimately explained:

For those curious about the fight itself here’s how sherdog recapped it:

 Round 1
Dern throws a low kick and gets sparked with a pair of counters from Yoder, but the jiu-jitsu ace starts throwing hands right back. Dern uses the punches to close the distance, then clinches up with Yoder and shoves her against the fence. Working with a bodylock, Dern begins hunting for a trip takedown while Yoder balances on one leg, leaning up against a cage post. Yoder separates herself from Dern, and the strawweights are back to striking with 3:30 on the clock. Yoder lands a loud kick to the body, then eats a wild right hand from Dern, who soon closes the gap for another clinch on the fence. Dern releases, backs up and catches a kick, but she can’t convert it into a takedown as Yoder once again does well to keep her balance. Dern throws out another wild bunch of punches to push Yoder against the wall, now changes levels for a double-leg takedown. Yoder tries to stand, and Dern moves to take the back, but Yoder scrapes her off with the help of the fence. Yoder lands a nice left hand that leaves Dern smiling as they hit the final 60 seconds of round one. Yoder plants another clean left hand on Dern as the round expires.

Round 2
Dern presses the action at the start of the second frame, landing a body kick before eating yet another Yoder left hand. This punch bloodies the mouth of Dern, who lands a wild overhand right as she steps into the pocket for another clinch. Dern shoves Yoder against a cage post with double underhooks; Yoder reverses to the outside and the pace slows until the 2:45 mark, when referee Tognoni splits up the strawweights. Dern rushes forward and runs into a short left hand from Yoder, and the BJJ wiz hits the deck for the first time in the fight. Dern springs back up, looking no worse for wear, but the UFC newcomer isn’t as quick to blitz Yoder on the feet now. Yoder comes over the top with the left again, then again, landing it clean each time, often as a counter over the top of a Dern low kick. Dern lands a low kick but is immediately backed up by another Yoder left hand. Yoder shuts down Dern’s final takedown attempt of the round in the last 10 seconds.

Round 3
Dern bombs her way into range with an overhand right, then works a single-leg as she shoves Yoder against the fence. Switching to a bodylock, Dern hunts for a trip, but Yoder is doing well to keep her balance. Yoder breaks out of the clinch with a left hand to the jaw, now attacks the body of Dern with knees. Dern clasps her hands around Yoder’s left leg but still can’t complete the takedown. The 115ers move back to the center of the cage with half the round remaining. Dern touches Yoder with a straight left, an inside leg kick, then goes body-head with a pair of right hands. Dern changes levels and finally drives Yoder to the ground with 1:40 on the clock. Passing straight to Yoder’s back, Dern sinks in one hook, then the second. Dern starts punching away, trying to soften up Yoder for a rear-naked choke. Yoder buries her chin and glues her hands to her head, but Dern nonetheless snakes her left arm around the throat of the Team Quest fighter. Yoder uses two-on-one defense to try and break up the choke, and she succeeds in peeling away Dern’s hands. Dern is still hunting for the choke as the final 10 seconds tick away.
