John Danaher Student Placido Santos Gets Ankle Torn Off From Brutal Estima Lock

The Estima Lock is an infamous foot lock that was developed by the Estima brothers Victor and Braulio.

At the 2011 No Gi World Championship Victor Estima won all his matches by Estima lock.

The Estima lock works by putting a rear naked choke on the ankle and trapping the foot under the stomach. The torsion is similar to a toe hold. The hold is only legal for brown and black belts under IBJJF rules.

The Estima lock is so powerful that very often, in competition, the opponnent barely has time to tap or scream before their ankle gets snapped…

This is what happened to Placido Santos last weekend. Placido is famous for being John Danaher’s uke on BJJ Fanatics instructionals. Placido competed over the weekend and was put in a nasty Estima lock by Calvin Tracey, a Tom DeBlass student.

The injured  Placido Santos wrote on Instagram

“Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose….and sometimes you lose while getting your foot torn off. The latter was my unfortunate situation tonight.”

DeBlass reached out to Placido Santos and offered his sympathies:

“The Estima lock is a lock that must be applied quickly and aggressively, as the knee line is not controlled. If it is applied gently, then the opponent will simply invert out of it.”

We wish Placido a speedy recovery.
