John Danaher: “I don’t just want to teach jiu-jitsu I want to change it!”

One of the most mysterious figures in the eye of the bjj public, John Danaher, did a great interview after EBI 8 that’s just come to surface.

During this amazing 20minute clip he talks preparing for different events, the respect he has for Eduardo Telles, Keenan Cornelius and Eddie Bravo along with why he’s joined social media.

On preparing for Keenan Cornelius:

“We were anticipating a very long match which which has a completely different cadence from EBI… ”

Danaher continued: “We have a pretty good understanding of Keenan’s game. I’ve always been an admirer of Keenan Cornelius’ , I’ve always admired the way he plays the sport. He’s another very versatile grappler, he can do any ruleset. He’s got a very wide array of submission holds which makes him a fascinating guy to prepare against. Many of the modern jiu-jitsu players typically have 3 or 4 things they do well, Keenan does the whole game well. And that was a really interesting fight camp.”

On joining Social Media and changes jiu-jitsu needs:

“The reason is practical. I’m almost 50 years old and jiu-jitsu is my absolute passion. but I do believe that changes are necessary in the sport of jiu-jitsu if it’s to remain relevant as a fighting art. I don’t just want to teach jiu-jitsu I want to change it and I do believe that certain changes can be made, not to the sport overall I still the traditional sport of jiu-jitsu but I do believe there should be alternative methods. That People who are interested in those alternatives can make use of. Especially those interested in transitioning to the sport of mixed martial arts. I wanted to communicate to more than just my 3 or 4 students to try to create a movement of people. “
